Geothermal Industries Australia (GIA) was engaged to deliver the geothermal drilling scope for a challenging multi‑level residential project in Cronulla, NSW. The project required drilling 15 geothermal probes to a depth of 135 metres each on a difficult 5‑level site with severely constrained access. Due to the building’s height and the absence of ground‑level entry for conventional drilling equipment, GIA executed a complex craning operation to lift the drilling rig onto the upper levels of the structure. The operation demanded meticulous planning, precise load calculations, and close coordination with the site team to ensure safe and successful rig placement. Once in position, our team navigated tight working platforms and restricted headroom to drill all 15 boreholes to the full 135‑metre specification, avoiding embedded services and structural elements throughout.
For this installation, GIA utilised our 45DN Muovitech Turbo pipe as the geothermal probe material. The 45DN diameter was selected for its excellent thermal transfer properties and hydraulic efficiency over the 135‑metre depth. Muovitech Turbo pipe’s robust construction, high burst pressure ratings, and flexibility during handling proved essential given the challenging craned access and the confined installation environment on each level. Each of the 15 probes was carefully installed, thermally grouted to maximise ground contact, and pressure‑tested to verify system integrity. The combination of GIA’s innovative craning solution, drilling precision, and high‑performance Muovitech Turbo pipe delivered a reliable, energy‑efficient geothermal loop field suited to this unique coastal site.
Finally, GIA extends its sincere thanks to the residential plumbing contractor and the broader project team for engaging us on this complex Cronulla job. Their trust in GIA’s ability to deliver on a tough 5‑level site with craned rig access was instrumental to the project’s success. We look forward to future opportunities to bring our expertise in difficult‑access geothermal drilling to similar projects across the Sutherland Shire and greater Sydney region.
